Our project focuses on building a web tool to showcase the accomplishments of women throughout history across various domains and inspire others. We created our own dataset for this, & visualized open-source data to understand the trends in women's employment & education.
Learning about the stories of inspirational and brilliant minds across the ages can be a great way to gain insight as well as push ourselves towards our goals, especially important for women in underrepresented fields across the world. We focused on curating a single platform that contains stories to inspire women all around the world and age groups. And which also contains informative statistics about women in these fields so that we can raise awareness about the issues faced by women.
We hope to inspire, educate women, and spread awareness through our project. Every young female deserves to find their role model and follow their passion and dreams while receiving equal opportunities.
This project firstly creates a relevant dataset that contains inspirational stories about women across STEM, Music and the Sports domains. Further, we build a web tool to display all these stories grouped by their field. The website also has a section dedicated to visualizing and analyzing relevant data on women's employment and education trends which helps us bring light to the various gender disparities and issues that exist in our society. Our tool is hence focused on both the UI design and data, as well as the social message and impact.
For the full stack development of our project, we used Python Flask, Javascript, Bootstrap, HTML/CSS for creating the front end and running our web app; for creating the dataset for our web page and integrating it with our front end, we used MySQL Database on Google cloud, we collected the information for this dataset from the web. For the data science aspect of the project, we got open-source data from Kaggle and US Census and used Python libraries such as Bokeh and GeoPandas to explore and visualize it.
The major challenge we faced was to obtain a relevant dataset that has inspiring information about women in different fields across the world. However, we used this challenge as an opportunity to create our own relevant dataset.
We were able to achieve the goals and expectations we set at the beginning of our project. We're happy to have created a relevant and useful dataset that we can continue building and working on and also the fact that we were able to get an efficient and visually appealing web tool up and running on time. We are also proud that with our project we're able to work on a very important and prevalent issue and bring attention to the various problems faced by women not just in Tech, but also in other fields.
We learnt how to change our challenges and roadblocks into valuable learning experiences. We also learnt how to think out of the box and solve a problem that could benefit a large group of people. Teamwork, time management and delegating are also some skills we worked on. Last but not the least, we had a lot of fun and enjoyed the entire process.
We would like to expand the dataset with more data points as well as diversify the fields and domains.
Further, we want to explore more statistics about women's employment and crawl the web for more information.
Adding more elements on the web page to inspire a more diverse group and generate more awareness on relevant issues is also a future step.
For the full stack development, we used the following tools: Python Flask, Bootstrap, HTML/CSS, MySQL, Google Cloud
For the data science part we used: Python, GeoPandas, Bokeh
